History
The history of the °µÍø½ûÇø starts in 1365 and is closely intertwined with the development of science, society and the city. The °µÍø½ûÇø is one of the top research universities in Europe. It enjoys a strong international profile thanks to its excellent academic work, outstanding places in global rankings and numerous prestigious awards, including the 2022 Nobel Prize in Physics awarded to Anton Zeilinger, emeritus professor at the °µÍø½ûÇø.

With around 11,000 employees, including approximately 7,700 academic staff, the °µÍø½ûÇø is Austria’s largest research institution and at the same time the country’s largest educational institution.
Its 20 faculties and centres are home to approximately 85,000 students from Austria and around the world. With 185 degree programmes, the University offers the most diverse range of studies in Austria.
Founded in the year 1365, the Alma Mater Rudolphina Vindobonensis celebrated its 650th anniversary in 2015 with a wide range of festive events. In autumn 2022 the °µÍø½ûÇø had the pleasure of congratulating the physicist Anton Zeilinger, for many years a professor at the University, after he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics. In international higher education and subject-specific rankings, the °µÍø½ûÇø regularly ranks in the top five per cent of all universities worldwide.
